Quick answer
First check the dishwasher tap is open and household pressure is good, then the inlet hose and its mesh filter. If all are fine, the inlet valve may have failed — or the leak sensor is raised by water in the base, blocking filling (with LC).
Overview
The dishwasher opens its inlet valve at the start of each stage to take a set amount of water. If it doesn’t arrive in time, it stops with 4C or 4E.
The dishwasher tap under the sink is often closed during maintenance and forgotten — always start there.
Likely causes
-
1
Tap closed or low pressure
The dishwasher tap is partly closed, the tank is empty, or pressure is low at that time.
-
2
Blocked inlet filter
The small mesh in the hose connection clogs with sand and scale.

3
Kinked inlet hose
Especially after pushing a built-in dishwasher into place.
-
4
Failed inlet valve
The valve coil can fail so it won’t open, or it can block mechanically.

5
Leak sensor raised
Water in the base lifts the float, so the dishwasher blocks filling to prevent flooding.

6
Door or board
If the door switch doesn’t confirm closure, or the board doesn’t command the valve, no water enters.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the dishwasher before any check, and close its tap if there is a leak. Wear gloves when checking the sump in case of broken glass, and don’t open the side or bottom panels.
- Fully open the dishwasher tap under the sink and check the kitchen tap has strong flow.
- Unplug, close the tap, unscrew the inlet hose and clean the mesh filter at its connection.
- Make sure the hose isn’t kinked behind the dishwasher or under the sink.
- Close the door firmly until it clicks.
- If LC also appears, the problem is likely water in the base — see the leaking guide.
Parts involved
Water inlet valve
An electric valve that opens to let in the right amount of water at each stage.
Inlet mesh filter
A small mesh at the inlet-hose connection that stops sand and scale from entering the valve.
Leak sensor (float)
A float in the base pan that rises when water collects, stopping filling, running the drain pump and showing a leak code.
Door latch & switch
Confirms to the board that the door is closed; without it the programme won’t start.
Main control board
Runs the programmes and drives pumps, valve and heater based on sensor readings.
When should you call a technician?
- The tap is open, pressure is good, the filter is clean, and no water enters.
- You hear the valve hum but no water flows.
- 4C repeats alongside LC.

Frequently asked questions
How much water does a dishwasher use?
Far less than most people expect — a small amount per stage, recirculated through the spray arms. That’s why it can look like “too little water”; it’s normal.
Can limescale damage the valve?
Yes, deposits can hinder the valve over time — so don’t remove the inlet filter, which protects it.
Why does 4C only appear at certain times?
Usually because pressure drops at those times, especially in tank-fed homes.
