Quick answer
Make sure the ice maker is switched on in settings, the supply tap is open, the water filter isn’t expired, and the bucket is seated properly. If ice is clumped into one block, the ice room isn’t cold enough or the dispenser hasn’t been used for a long time.
Overview
The ice maker fills its tray with water through a valve and tube, waits until it freezes, then twists or briefly warms the tray to drop the cubes into the bucket. A temperature sensor tells it when the water has frozen.
Some Samsung models have the ice maker inside the fridge door in an “ice room” cooled by its own fan; others have it in the freezer. Typical faults differ a little between the two.
Likely causes
-
1
No water or low pressure
A closed tap, expired filter, kinked line or low pressure — small cubes or no ice.

-
2
Frozen fill tube
Ice in the fill tube stops water reaching the tray; on some models it’s linked to the tube heater (33E).

3
Clumped or jammed ice
Ice left unused for a long time, or an ice room that isn’t cold enough (40E), makes cubes stick and jam.

4
Ice maker cycle fault
A motor or tray jammed by ice; 39E may appear.

5
Ice maker sensor
A wrong reading stops filling or ejecting; 8E or 14E may appear.

6
Water inlet valve
If the valve doesn’t open, usually neither the ice maker nor the dispenser gets water.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the fridge before cleaning the rear grille or moving it, and close the water supply tap if there’s a leak. Don’t remove inner panels or the compressor cover, and never chip ice with sharp tools — you could puncture the refrigerant tubing.
- Make sure the ice maker is on (Ice On) on the control panel.
- Make sure the fridge’s water supply tap is fully open.
- Check the water filter’s age — most filters need regular replacement depending on use and your model’s manual.
- Remove the ice bucket, empty it and loosen clumps with lukewarm water (not sharp tools), then dry and refit it firmly.
- Try the dispenser: if no water comes out either, the issue is the supply, valve or filter.
- After any change, allow 24 hours for normal ice production to return.
Parts involved
Ice maker
Fills, freezes and ejects ice cubes, with its own sensor and motor.
Ice room fan
On models with an in-door ice maker, pushes cold air into the ice room.
Water filter
Filters dispenser and ice-maker water; an expired filter slows the flow.
Water inlet valve
Opens to supply the dispenser and ice maker.
Water line & fittings
Tubing from the supply to the dispenser; can freeze, kink or leak.
Dispenser assembly
The paddle, switches and motor that deliver water or ice through the door.
When should you call a technician?
- No water from the dispenser and no ice despite an open tap and new filter.
- Ice keeps forming inside the ice room or around the tray.
- 39E, 40E, 8E or 33E appears.
- The ice maker motor runs but doesn’t eject.

Frequently asked questions
How long until the first batch of ice?
After installation or a restart it can take up to 24 hours to produce a normal amount of ice.
Why is the ice small or hollow?
Usually low water pressure or an expired filter, so the tray doesn’t fill completely.
Can I switch the ice maker off if I don’t use it?
Yes — empty the bucket to avoid clumping and turn it off on the control panel.
