Quick answer
Most of the time results improve by loading only three-quarters of the drum, using the right amount and type of detergent, choosing a programme and temperature that suit the fabric, and cleaning the detergent drawer and drum. If water doesn’t heat or detergent isn’t drawn from the drawer, there is a fault to check.
Overview
Good washing depends on four factors: mechanical action of the clothes tumbling, detergent, temperature and time. Lacking any one weakens the result.
With hard water, detergent works less well and residue builds faster, so you may need to adjust the dose or use a detergent suited to hard water.
Likely causes
-
1
Overloading
A packed drum stops clothes tumbling, so water and detergent don’t reach every item.
-
2
Wrong detergent amount or type
Too little doesn’t clean; too much leaves residue and foam that prevent good rinsing. Non-automatic detergents create excess suds.
-
3
Wrong programme or temperature
Quick programmes suit lightly soiled clothes only; greasy stains need higher temperatures.
-
4
Detergent not drawn from the drawer
A blocked drawer or weak water flow into it leaves detergent behind instead of reaching the drum.

Water not heating
A failed heater means hot programmes run cold, weakening stain removal.

Poor draining or wrong water level
Dirty water left behind, or too little water because of the sensor, weakens results.

Safe checks before calling a technician
Unplug the washer and close the water tap before any check. Do not open the back or top panels, and do not touch wiring or circuit boards — that work is for a qualified technician.
- Load so there is a hand’s width of space above the clothes.
- Follow the dose on the pack for load size and soiling.
- Remove and clean the detergent drawer; make sure detergent is fully drawn after a wash.
- Run a Drum Clean cycle monthly with no clothes.
- Clean the pump filter.
- Check water heats on hot programmes (the door glass becomes warm).
Parts involved
Detergent drawer
Delivers detergent and softener with incoming water; blockages affect cleaning and can cause leaks.
Heating element
An electrical element under the tub that heats the water for the selected programme.
Water inlet valve
An electric valve that opens and closes to let water in; it may feed several detergent compartments.
Pump filter
A filter in front of the pump that catches lint, coins and small objects; usually opened from a small cover at the bottom front.
Water-level (pressure) sensor
Measures air pressure in a tube connected to the tub to know how much water is inside.
When should you call a technician?
- Detergent stays in the drawer after washing despite cleaning it.
- Water doesn’t heat on hot programmes.
- The washer clearly uses very little water.
- Codes such as HE or Sud appear repeatedly.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there white residue on dark clothes?
Usually too much detergent, undissolved powder, or overloading that prevents rinsing. Try less detergent and an extra rinse.
Does fabric softener affect cleaning?
Too much softener can coat clothes and towels and reduce absorbency. Use it sparingly.
How often should I run a drum-clean cycle?
About once a month, or every 30–40 washes; some models remind you automatically.
